It has DETAILED instructions on how to adjust the grinder for very fine grinding or very coarse grinding as needed. Personally, i would advise cleaning it thoroughly with the brush provided about every 2-3 weeks if you are a daily user. Purchased this grinder in May, 2007. Also, this grinder takes more maintenance than one would expect. Otherwise, you end up with stale coffee dust mixed in with your fresh grind and this gives an off taste to the coffee. I make my own espresso and it grinds quite well. For those who complain that it doesn't grind as advertised, i would recommend that they read the manual.
Adjusting the burr spacing to the minimum still did not produce a good grind for 25-30 sec shots. Zero static in the grounds. Not good for espresso, though. Probably the best grinder available for drip and French press coffee brewing. Quiet, very even grind, almost no grounds retention, as the coffee drops straight through into the glass bin.
I'm pleased. It works as promised, looks great, and has a heavy high quality feel to it. I have bought kitchenAid factory-reconditioned appliances before and have always been happy with their quality and value. This burr grinder is no different.
It grinds perfect for either espresso or for drip. I got this KitchenAid Pro Line and it works so much better and faster. And I got it for the same price as the Starbucks model so that is another plus. After looking at these for several days at Amazon and on Ebay, I decided to get a factory reconditioned one through Amazon. I am so glad I found this one, the reconditioned model looks and performs just like new. I am SO happy that I did. The price was right ($90.00) so I went ahead and ordered it. For the last few years I have been using Starbucks burr grinder but was getting fed up with the coffee beans sticking in it and clogging it up.It would take FOREVER to grind beans for just one pot.
The bean hopper is generous in size also. Even the operating noise is much less than expected. The huge motor gives this machine an ability to almost grind rocks. The instruction book, yes, a real book, tells you how to not only clean the machine well but also how to change the grinding range for anything imaginable. When I compared the price of this machine vs the metallic finished Pro-Lines, I find it obvious that Ferrari Red is the way to go. The grind setting knob is huge and easy to read. The coffee bin seems immune to that darn static cling.
